At NR, we combine methodological expertise with practical solutions to tackle complex societal challenges. Our work spans diverse areas, including language technology, universal design, infrastructure inspection and digital transformation. We are also committed to developing methods that enhance transparency and accountability in AI-based systems. By tailoring our approaches to each unique challenge, we deliver solutions that are both straightforward and robust, supporting communities, improving processes and building trust in emerging technologies. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Language technology<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Language technology refers to technologies that process and utilise natural language data. One of the most well-known examples of language technology is ChatGPT which, along with other large language models (LLMs), has been a key area of research at NR since 2018. Our work focuses on training and developing models using limited datasets and addressing the unique challenges of Norwegian language technology where resources are often scarce. This spans text mining, classification, anonymisation, automated translation, and applications such as social robots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social robots <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We explore how social robots can enhance education and foster better understanding between groups. Our research includes assisting young children with language learning, improving social communication, and advancing robots\u2019 ability to understand and generate human language using advanced models. We also address ethical challenges and work on developing and evaluating prototypes that are inclusive and impactful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Universal design<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Universal design ensures that products and services are accessible to as many people as possible, regardless of ability. At NR, our Digital Inclusion group focuses particularly on universal design in ICT. From XR technology and accessible healthcare videos to digital tools for the visually impaired, we collaborate closely with user groups to develop accessible solutions. By fostering participation in education, employment, and community engagement, universal design enhances individual well-being while benefiting society as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Automated infrastructure inspection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

NR develops automated methods for inspecting infrastructure such as railways, bridges, and roads using images captured by drones, aircraft, and trains. Our research focuses on training deep neural networks to detect faults, including cracks, rust, or missing bolts. By replacing time-consuming, costly, and potentially hazardous manual inspections, our automated methods can save money, improve safety, and enhance the reliability of transportation services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital transformation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We are dedicated to advancing digital transformation in services and products through various research and development initiatives. Our work focuses on improving processes, user experiences, and workflows while addressing challenges in areas such as privacy protection, human-computer interaction, real estate management and artificial intelligence. By developing new solutions and refining existing ones, we drive innovation and contribute to knowledge across diverse sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explainable artificial intelligence (XAI)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Artificial intelligence and machine learning are increasingly influencing decision-making in public services. However, these systems often function as opaque black boxes, leaving the reasoning behind their decisions and predictions unclear. This lack of transparency undermines trust and accountability in critical areas. At NR, we are working towards solutions that prioritise transparency and understanding. A key example is our navigational toolkit, eXplego, which helps developers select appropriate XAI methods. Explainable artificial intelligence builds confidence in automated decisions through quality-assured calculations and clear explanations. XAI is not just about improving technology, it also fosters trust in the systems shaping the future of our communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
